When You Don't Know What to Pray About

Have you ever prayed and felt as if it was staged and preplanned? Have you ever prayed because you felt as if it was an obligation instead of it being a blessing? I try to pray every night, and it is usually the last thing I do. But I have noticed that some nights I feel worn, and I just want to go to sleep. So, I pray an ordinary prayer that lacks substance and a base for a deep conversation just to get through my daily prayer session. And this got me wondering, why would I talk to God like this when I wouldn’t talk with my best friends like this?

Something a lot of people make the mistake of doing is they will be in this in-between stage, where things are not bad but they’re not necessarily good either. When in this situation,  people tend to not know what to pray about. We are often taught that if we are going through a dark time, we need to turn to God. He has a plan for us and He will always get us through whatever our current situation is. We are also taught that when things are going good, we need to worship and praise God because we wouldn’t be receiving the success and happiness without Him. But what about that in between stage? Do our prayers reflect the blandness of the situation we are in? What do we pray about when we feel like there is nothing to pray about?

When you find this happening to you, think about what you would talk about with your best friend. Think about all the things you would want to talk about, and then tell God all about those topics. Because, He is your best friend, or at least He is trying to be. If worst comes to worst and you just have nothing to say, just give it up to God. Worship Him. When I find myself in this position I tend to just tell God that I don’t know what He is doing, and I don’t know the plan He has for me, but I know the love and trust I have for Him. And I hold on to that.

You see, God has given us free will, but He hopes that we still use our free will to make good choices and run to Him in any situation. No matter how good or bad things are going, I promise if you just talk to God about anything and everything, He will listen. And if all else fails, praise Him. We were created to honor and praise God and it is only right that we fulfill this duty.
